Social Bookmarking: A Way to Maximize Your Blogging Efforts

Social Bookmarking: A Way to Maximize Your Blogging Efforts

One mistake that many new bloggers and internet marketers make, is not taking advantage of social bookmarking.  There are a plethora of bookmarking sites out there and just as many tools/widgets that make it easier to share your latest posts.  Part of the battle however, is figuring out which social bookmarking sites are best for your purposes.  I also highly recommend using a proper social bookmarking tool and strategically place it at the end of your blog posts.  The right social bookmarking tool will make it easier for you and your fans to share your latest and greatest posts.  I personally recommend Shareaholic, and I will show you why!  But first I would like to show you which social bookmarking sites I personally use, and why.

Social Bookmarking Sites: Which Ones Are Right For You?

There literally seems to be a hundred social bookmarking (and sharing) sites, and new ones are popping up all the time.  They come in many different functions and flavors, and you should focus on the ones that make the most sense for your content.  These are the ones I have chosen to use:

Delicious is the number one social bookmarking site

1. Delicious

The number one social bookmarking site on the web.  Delicious was acquired by YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen and rebuilt/relaunched in 2011 with a focus on curation and discovery.

A popular social bookmarking site2. StumbleUpon

A popular social bookmarking site that uses a discovery engine to find and recommend web content. It allows users to find and rate web pages, photos, and videos that are personalized to their interests using peer-sourcing and social-networking dynamics.

3. Reddit Another popular social bookmarking site

A site that provides a list of links to other websites that are sorted into categories called ‘subreddits.’  Users can submit a link to a subreddits category, and have the option to rate each link with an ‘upvote,’ (meaning that they liked the link) or a ‘downvote’ (dislike). Based on popularity, links are sorted on the front page of Reddit to indicate which ones are ‘trending’ (receiving a lot of upvotes) and links that are already popular (have already established a large number of upvotes).

Technorati is a popular social bookmarking site you should use4. Technorati

Technorati is a search engine for blogs.  It tracks over 22 million web sites and produces billions of links.  It determines blog authority by the number of inbound links you have received in the past six months.  Technorati is a great way to find high ranking blogs with content similar to yours.  Pro-Tip: If you see a blog with a high authority rank, you should start commenting on it to attract attention to yourself.

(The next five are not technically ‘social bookmarking’ sites, but they are options you will want to include for ‘social sharing’ using the social sharing tool I am going to recommend later in this post)

5. FriendFeedFriendFeed is a social bookmarking site that helps spread the word of your blog

Your reader’s friends could be using many different social sharing services online. FriendFeed lets them put all of their online activity in one place.  A useful way to share everything in one place and it allows commenting and discussion like Facebook or Twitter.

The number one social networking/sharing site.6. Facebook

With 1.1 billion users worldwide in 2012 (including 1.1 million monthly active users), Facebook is necessity in your internet marketing/social sharing tool belt!

7. TwitterThe number two social networking site behind Facebook

With 250 million unique users a month, and the ability to develop a large following that you can blast out your latest posts too with the ease of a single tweet… Twitter easily takes my number two spot on this list.

LinkedIn is a social networking site for consummate professionals8. LinkedIn

A social networking site that is on the rise, LinkedIn is an excellent place to network with professionals in any area of business.  It is a great place to share your business and develop relationships with the CEO’s, corporations and entrepreneurs of the world.

9.  PinterestPinterest is a visual social networking site... one of the top ten social networking websites in 2012

A relatively new social sharing site that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, hobbies, and etc..  Pinterest has experienced incredible growth, having become the third largest social network in the US as of March 2012.

10. Google+Google Plus is a can't miss social networking site

Google’s foray into social networking… do I need to say more?  Google is stepping up to challenge Facebook for social media dominance and has just comparable brand recognition.  This is one you just can’t skip, you’d really be missing out on a lot of value.

  1. I’m reasonably certain that you made a typo in the section on Facebook, where you said “901 monthly active users.”

Do you know the actual figure?

  2. Hey, since I’m only using reddit, facebook and twitter for promoting my posts can you recommend any guide or tutorial for using social networks such as Delicious or Stumble upon to bring traffic?

  3. Very helpful content here, I dig the explanations on each, Technorati sounds like something I would be very interested so thanks for bringing this to my attention! I’m going to mark that down in my business notes. As for adding new sociable widgets onto my wordpress site, how would I go about adding one for Pinterest? I searched into the plugin on my wordpress site and couldn’t find it there? Any tips there on that? Quality advice from this post my man! Youre a real help!!!

    • I just checked the Sociable plugin settings and it appears that Pinterest is not among the offered icons, which is unfortunate. I would recommend adding a Pinterest Icon to your social media icons located at the header of your website page. I can help you set that up, lets discuss further by email!
